Slow conversion from Word to PDF

It takes on average 4 seconds to convert a simple Word document to PDF... is this normal?  Is there anything I can do to optimize it?

Conversion request for Word (and other office file types) has to go through multiple stages before the final PDF is produced and one of the stages involves calling MS Word to render the document, which is time-consuming step. Due to this multi-step process the conversion times you are seeing is normal and it is not possible to speed up the conversions.
